No Work Experience? No Worries
Everyone has to start their professional career somewhere, and today, it’s your turn! But how do you get a foot in the door when you haven’t worked in paid employment before? Here are some tips and tricks for getting a job with no experience.
Have a Resume
Gone are the days when you could walk into a job with nothing more than a recommendation from a family member or friend. You’ll need a resume. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it should include some basic information:
- Your name, email, and mobile number
- Core competencies, like teamwork and communication skills
- Any achievements or positions of responsibility (e.g., at school, university/TAFE, or in sports clubs)
- Your qualifications
- Other useful details, such as a current driver’s license
There are plenty of free templates online that you can use to create your resume.
Draft a Cover Letter or Email
Similar to your resume, you’ll find templates online that you can adapt for the types of jobs you’re applying for. While it might be tempting to use a generic cover letter or email, try to tailor them to each role. Ask a trusted friend or family member to proofread your work. Presenting yourself well increases your chances of securing an interview.
Use Your Personal and Professional Networks
Let people know you’re looking for a job—both online and offline. You can ask family and friends for ideas or contacts. Consider posting on a local community page on Facebook or networking in your area of interest. If you’re looking for something industry-specific, think about setting up a LinkedIn profile and joining relevant groups. With over one billion users, LinkedIn is a vast platform for job seekers and professionals.
Go to Career Fairs or Expos
These in-person events are excellent opportunities to meet employers, discuss job openings, and even apply on the spot. You might also learn about roles you hadn’t considered before.
Apply to Recruitment Agencies
Send your brand-new resume to a few recruitment agencies. They may have roles available that don’t require any experience and can provide you with tips for your job search.
Be a Volunteer
While looking for work, consider volunteering some of your time in your local community. You could help out at a local op shop or animal shelter, for example. This way, you’ll gain valuable skills and experience.
Don’t Give Up!
Getting your first job may take time, especially if you’re targeting a specific role. Keep looking, keep applying, and stay positive. Your persistence will pay off.
