Learn New Skills
If you’re hard-working, physically active and reliable, a temp role in the warehouse industry might be just the ticket for you! And with so many warehouses out there, specialising in anything from ready meals to construction supplies, you may be spoilt for choice.
Warehouse work generally includes the following:
- Picking and packing items for dispatch
- Unloading/loading delivery trucks
- Checking items against invoices and making sure they are undamaged
- Sorting and storing items in the right place
- Using machinery, e.g. forklifts
- Following health and safety policies and procedures
- Making sure your workplace is clean and tidy
Here’s how to get a temp job in the warehouse industry.
Make sure you have an up-to-date resume
All you need is a good summary of your skills, qualifications and professional experience. You’ll find plenty of resume templates available online. Or ask a recruiter for their advice.
Ask family and friends for a referral
If you know someone who works in a warehouse, chat with them about their experience. If it sounds like the type of place you would like to be, ask them for a referral or who to contact for a job.
Invest in PPE
Steel toe boots are a must. Other items such as high-vis vests, safety glasses and gloves (and workplace specific PPE) will generally be supplied to temporary employees.
Apply for pick and pack roles
If you don’t have any prior experience in warehouse work, apply for an entry-level pick and pack role. You’ll find relevant ads on job platforms like SEEK or Indeed. It’s also worth approaching a couple of recruitment agencies that specialise in warehouse roles. These can be great ways to get a foot in the door.
Consider further study
A relevant qualification will show employers that you’re really committed to warehouse work. TAFE offers a Cert III in Supply Chain Operations (Warehousing Operations), which covers all sorts of topics, such as how to store goods and complete safety documentation.
Go for your forklift licence
If you’re over 18, you might want to get a forklift licence. There are two types:
- Class LF ticket – to operate a regular forklift truck
- Class LO ticket – for an order picking forklift
It only takes 2-3 days to gain your licence, which is then valid for 5 years. Money well spent!
