Dive Into The Gig Economy & Casual Jobs That Fit Your Lifestyle

Chasing Flexibility?

The concept of ‘gigs’ can be traced back to the early-1900s when jazz musicians talked about their performances as ‘gigs’. The term ‘gig economy’ is much more recent, appearing in Australia from 2009. But the central idea remains the same. Gigs, whether you’re a musician, delivery driver or care worker, are generally temporary, freelance work with no paid holiday or sick leave. With the rise of the Internet, they have exploded in popularity, with gig workers and clients able to easily connect and collaborate.

Here’s a brief dive into the gig economy and casual jobs that fit your lifestyle.

There is no fixed data on how many people in Australia work in the gig economy. Back in 2020, the Actuaries Institute estimated that it ‘may be as large as 250,000 workers’. The real figure is likely higher. Why is this? What is the attraction of working in the gig economy? And is there a downside?

You might choose to work gigs for a number of reasons:

Independence

With gig work, you can call the shots, especially when you’re established. You might need to do some hard graft at the beginning, though, to get your name out there.

Flexibility

As a gig worker, you decide when you work. Not for you, the standard four weeks annual leave per year. You can take off for two months if you want, without having to negotiate with an employer. Or you might choose to work four nights a week so you can keep up with other work, study or family commitments.

Extra income

You might have a permanent role elsewhere but be looking to bring in extra $$$ through a side hustle. You’ll just need to make sure that your gig work doesn’t conflict with your other job.

Varied entry requirements

Gig jobs may not require specific licences, checks and formal qualifications so offer you opportunities if that’s your situation.

On the flip side, you should bear in mind that gig jobs can be precarious. There’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to work the days and times you want to work. You won’t have the benefits of a permanent role should you fall sick or need time off for another reason. And chances are you won’t get many opportunities to train or progress in a role.

If all things considered, you feel that this type of work is a good option for you, here are five of the top gig jobs as featured on major online job platforms this year:

  • Rideshare and food delivery driver
  • Freelance writer
  • Virtual assistant
  • Handyman or house cleaner
  • Web designer or developer
